Artists in isolation connect through Internet The Musical

A team of 50 artists from about 10 different countries, who currently live in isolation, are working together online to create a
musical about the internet. On May 13th the first music video and the website of the project will be launched:
Internet The Musical has begun. The proceedings of this transboundary project can be followed via www.internetthemusical.com.
You can take a look behind the scenes, read the script as it is being written, play scores and view recordings of scenes and music videos.

The first song released by Internet the Musical is the Server Appreciation Anthem. A song in which humanity praises The Server,
for it keeps connecting us. Especially in home-bound times like these, we learn how dependent we are on the internet and the servers behind it,
that literally serve us. In the music video an enthusiastic crowd of actors and dancers is dancing and praising The Server. All recorded at home.
Very personal and very cheerful.

An international team
All artists who participate in Internet The Musical have responded to an open call, which was shared internationally through various media in
different languages. The result is a diverse team of 50 artists, including musicians, actors, designers, dancers and writers from a dozen different
countries. The aim of this project is to collaborate online to create a story about connection in times of isolation. Scenes, songs and
choreographies are shared through the website each time one is finished. The script for the entire musical will be completed at the end of June.

From Poland to France
The creation process of the first song and the accompanying music video was not easy. Usually the artistic team comes together in a recording
studio or film set, but now everything had to be done from home and individually. This resulted in a new and innovative way of working:
the song was written in Amsterdam and distributed to the participants in a demo version with sheet music, then musicians and singers in
several countries recorded their parts and sent them back to Amsterdam, where the music was professionally mixed. A choreographer in
Poland worked out dance steps for the video and shared them via a YouTube tutorial, with styling and camera advice from Berlin.
Individual versions of the dance were recorded at home, sent via WeTransfer and are currently being edited in France.

The prequel
Internet The Musical did not start because of Covid-19: in 2016 the art collective Questions Collective produced a first version. A large part of
those preparations already took place online. The participants first met at the dress rehearsal and performed immediately after that.
“That turned out to be a great success, which made us immediately dream of a sequel. Now that most people are at home, this appears to be
the time to breathe new life into Internet The Musical. In addition, it is an opportunity to explore new forms of collaboration and see how and
whether the performing arts can survive with the help of the internet,” said Flavia Faas and Céline Talens, members of Questions Collective.

Live show
“We don't want to replace the performing arts with a digital version, but supplement it with a new variant. Working online makes international
collaboration easier and by giving your colleagues a lot of trust and responsibility, this method provides different and more surprising material,”
said Faas and Talens.

The musical's script and songs will be finished by the end of June. After that, when the corona crisis will have calmed down,
Internet The Musical can be performed live. Offline, in a large theater, with real people.

Dit online theatergezelschap heeft geen last van offline restricties

Een team van 50 thuiswerkende artiesten uit verschillende landen werkt online samen aan een musical over het internet.
De eerste videoclip én de website worden op 13 mei  gelanceerd. Daarmee is het startsein van Internet The Musical gegeven:
een ode aan de verbindende kracht van internet. Op www.internetthemusical.com kan je de vorderingen volgen van dit
grensoverschrijdende project. Je kunt er een kijk nemen achter de schermen, het script meelezen terwijl het geschreven wordt,
partituren meespelen én registraties van scènes en videoclips bekijken.

De eerste videoclip is die van het Server Appreciation Anthem. In dit lied bedanken de personages van Internet The Musical The Server.
Het personage dat ervoor zorgt dat wij allemaal online verbonden kunnen zijn.  Vooral nu we met z’n allen aan huis gekluisterd zijn,
is toegang tot het internet een vitale levensbehoefte. De videoclip is opgenomen door deelnemers vanuit hun eigen huis, een grote variatie
aan mensen danst mee in de badkamer, woonkamer of slaapkamer. Heel persoonlijk en heel vrolijk. 

Een internationaal team
Alle artiesten die meewerken aan Internet The Musical hebben gereageerd op een open call, die via verschillende media in verschillende
talen internationaal werd gedeeld. Het resultaat is een divers team van 50 artiesten, waaronder muzikanten, acteurs, designers, dansers en
schrijvers uit een tiental verschillende landen. Het doel van dit project is om gezamenlijk en online een verhaal te maken dat gaat over
verbinding in tijden van isolatie. Scènes, liedjes en choreografieën worden, telkens wanneer er één klaar is, gedeeld via de website.
Eind juni zal het script voor de gehele musical klaar zijn.

Van Polen tot Frankrijk
Het maakproces van het eerste lied en de bijbehorende videoclip was niet eenvoudig. Gewoonlijk komt het artistieke team samen in een
opnamestudio of filmset, maar nu moest alles vanuit huis en individueel gebeuren. Dit leverde een nieuwe en innovatieve werkwijze op:
het lied werd in Amsterdam geschreven en in een demoversie met bladmuziek naar de deelnemers verspreid, muzikanten en zangers namen
zelf hun partij op en stuurden die terug naar Amsterdam, waar de muziek professioneel werd gemixt. Voor de videoclip werkte een
choreografe in Polen danspasjes uit en deelde die via een YouTube tutorial, voorzien van styling- en camera advies uit Berlijn.
Individuele versies van de dans werden thuis opgenomen, via WeTransfer verstuurd en worden op dit moment in Frankrijk gemonteerd. 

De prequel
Internet The Musical is niet ontstaan door Covid-19: in 2016 voerde kunstcollectief Questions Collective een eerste versie uit.
Hierbij vond al  een groot deel van de voorbereidingen online plaats en kwamen de deelnemers de laatste dag samen voor een repetitie en
meteen aansluitend de opvoering. “Dat was een groot succes, waardoor meteen werd gedroomd van een vervolg. En nu de meeste mensen
thuis zitten, bleek dit hét moment om Internet The Musical nieuw leven in te blazen. Bovendien is het een kans om nieuwe vormen van
samenwerking te onderzoeken en te kijken hoe en of de podiumkunsten met behulp van internet kan overleven,”
aldus Flavia Faas en Céline Talens, leden van Questions Collective.

DeLaMar
“We willen de podiumkunsten niet vervangen door een digitale versie, maar aanvullen met een nieuwe variant. Online werken maakt
internationale samenwerking gemakkelijker en door je collega’s veel vertrouwen en verantwoordelijkheid te geven levert deze methode
ander en verrassender materiaal op”, aldus Faas en Talens.

Het script en de liedjes van de musical zullen eind juni af zijn. Daarna, wanneer de corona-crisis voorbij is, kan Internet The Musical live
worden uitgevoerd. Offline, in een groot theater. Het DeLaMar zou mooi zijn.
